Regulations for Manuscript Submission and Peer Review

Article 1 (Purpose)

The purpose of these regulations is to define all matters related to the publication of K-Heritage Review (hereinafter "the Journal"), the official academic journal of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage at Chungbuk National University (hereinafter "the Institute"). These regulations aim to establish a fair and transparent peer review and publication process that aligns with international scholarly publishing standards.

Article 2 (Publication Frequency and Schedule)

  • A. The Journal is published twice a year, on June 30 and December 31.
  • B. The Journal adheres to a strict publication schedule, which is disclosed on the official website.

Article 3 (Manuscript Submission)

  • A. The Journal accepts research articles and other scholarly contributions concerning domestic and international cultural heritage that align with the Institute's academic goals.
  • B. Eligible contributors are domestic and international researchers or specialists who hold at least a Master's degree or equivalent qualifications.
  • C. For collaborative research, authors must be listed in order of contribution (First Author, Co-authors), and the Corresponding Author must be clearly designated.
  • D. All authors must explicitly state their research contributions; unfair authorship practices are strictly prohibited.
  • E. Manuscripts may be submitted in Korean or English.
  • F. Submissions must be original works that have not been published in other domestic or international journals.
  • G. The similarity index of a submitted manuscript should, in principle, be below 15–20%. If it exceeds this range, the Editorial Board may exclude the manuscript from review or request revisions.
  • H. Authors must submit manuscripts through the online submission system and pay the prescribed review fee.
  • I. All contributors must comply with the Institute's Research Ethics Regulations.
  • J. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools must be disclosed, specifying the scope and purpose of use. AI cannot be credited as an author.

Article 4 (Manuscript Length and Fees)

  • A. Manuscripts should be prepared on A4 size paper. The length should not exceed 25 printed pages, including necessary figures, photographs, and tables. An excess page fee of 25,000 KRW per page will be charged for submissions exceeding this limit.
  • B. The Institute may charge authors for review and publication fees. The exact amount is calculated based on the final printed version.

Article 5 (Principles of Review)

  • A. The peer review process is managed by the Editorial Board.
  • B. Each manuscript is evaluated by at least three subject-matter experts, with the final decision made by the Editorial Board.
  • C. Double-Blind Review: The review process is conducted anonymously to ensure that the identities of both authors and reviewers remain undisclosed to each other.
  • D. Special features, book reviews, and data reports are finalized after a review by the Editorial Board.
  • E. Reviewers and editors must be recused from the review and decision-making process if a Conflict of Interest (COI) exists.

Article 6 (Review Methods and Procedures)

  • A. Manuscripts are evaluated according to established procedures, and results—including revision requests—are communicated transparently to the author.
  • B. Preliminary Review: The Editorial Board conducts an initial screening for suitability regarding field, format, and length.
  • C. Desk Rejection: The Editorial Board may issue a "Desk Rejection" for manuscripts that do not meet the Journal's scope or quality standards before sending them for external review.
  • D. Manuscripts that pass the preliminary stage undergo a secondary review by at least three appointed reviewers.
  • E. Reviewers must be experts in the relevant field and, in principle, should not be affiliated with the same institution as the author.
  • F. Evaluation criteria include originality, academic contribution, methodology, logic, citation appropriateness, and the timeliness and internationality of references.
  • G. Reviewers categorize their evaluation into four grades: "Accept" (A), "Accept after Revision" (B), "Resubmit after Revision" (C), or "Reject" (D).
  • H. The Editorial Board determines the final status based on the following synthesized criteria:
    • ① AAA, AAB: Accept without revision.
    • ② ABB, BBB, AAC, ABC: Accept after revision.
    • ③ AAD, BBC, ABD: Editorial decision (Accept after revision or Resubmit).
    • ④ ACC, ACD, BBD, BCC, BCD, CCC: Resubmit after revision (Major revision).
    • ⑤ ADD, BDD, CCD, CDD, DDD: Reject.
  • I. For manuscripts marked as "Resubmit after Revision", only one re-evaluation is permitted. If it receives the same grade again, it is automatically "Rejected".
  • J. Manuscripts that receive a final "Reject" decision are not eligible for re-submission.
  • K. The review period is typically four weeks but may be extended if necessary.
  • L. Reviewers are prohibited from disclosing or using information acquired during the review process for personal research.

Article 7 (Notification of Results and Revision)

  • A. Details regarding the review process remain confidential.
  • B. The Editor-in-Chief communicates review results and revision requirements to the author via the Editorial Secretary.
  • C. Authors must respect the reviewers' feedback and submit a revised manuscript along with a "Response to Reviewers" table outlining the changes made.
  • D. The Editorial Board may refuse publication if revisions are deemed insufficient.
  • E. Even if accepted, publication may be postponed to a subsequent issue depending on the Institute's circumstances.
  • F. Matters not specified in these regulations shall be decided by the Editorial Board.
  • G. If ethical issues (plagiarism, data manipulation) are discovered after acceptance or publication, the Editorial Board may revoke the publication following a review by the Ethics Committee.
  • H. In case of revocation, the article will be formally retracted, and the reasons/date of retraction will be clearly stated on the website and online platforms.

Article 8 (Manuscript Preparation)

  • A. Specific formatting and preparation guidelines are defined separately by the Editorial Board.
  • B. Citations and references must follow international standard styles (e.g., APA, Chicago, or Harvard as specified).

Article 9 (Appeals and Dispute Resolution)

  • A. Authors may request a re-evaluation in writing if they disagree with the review results, providing a detailed statement of justification.
  • B. The Editor-in-Chief shall decide on the re-evaluation within 30 days after deliberation by the Editorial Board and notify the author within 14 days of the decision.
  • C. If a re-evaluation is granted, three new experts (excluding previous reviewers) will be appointed.
  • D. The final decision on re-reviewed manuscripts rests with the Editorial Board.
  • E. Re-review and publication decisions through appeals are limited to one round.
  • F. The appeal process is conducted through independent deliberation by the Editorial Board to ensure fairness and transparency.

Article 10 (Copyright and Open Access)

  • A. Copyright of published manuscripts is transferred to the Institute; however, authors may freely use their work for non-commercial academic purposes.
  • B. Open Access: The Journal operates under an Open Access policy. Published articles are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC) license. Specific license terms follow the Journal's policy.
  • C. Copyright includes digital reproduction and transmission rights.
  • D. Responsibility for obtaining copyright permission for figures and illustrations lies solely with the author.
  • E. Reuse of the author's own work for books or monographs is generally permitted, provided the original source is cited.

Article 11 (Miscellaneous)

Matters not specified herein shall follow customary academic practices, with international publishing standards and research ethics guidelines taking precedence.

Addenda

  • (1) These regulations were enacted on December 1, 1997.
  • (2) These regulations shall enter into force on December 1, 2018.
  • (3) These regulations shall enter into force on March 19, 2026.
