Abstract

This paper examines and compares the Stone-mound tombs of the early Goguryeo period and the early Iron Age stone tombs of the Liaodong region. The early Iron Age in the Liaodong region was a series of very chaotic situations, going through historical events such as the replacement of Yan, Jin, and Han and the fall of Gojoseon. Due to the clash of various cultures, multiple tomb rites coexist at the same time in one site, and even for the same tomb rite, it is difficult to find consistent funeral rites or rules for tomb rites, like in tombs that use different funeral rites. These aspects are well reflected in the Tonghwa Manbalbalja site, which provides an opportunity to look at cultural aspects from the Bronze Age through the early Iron Age to the mid-Goguryeo period. Accordingly, this paper examines the aspects of tombs before the founding of Goguryeo found in the Liaodong region, including the ruins of Manbalbalja, and compares them with the structure of Goguryeo's early Stone-mound tombs. As a result, it was confirmed that Goguryeo's early Stone-mound tombs had a certain connection with the early Iron Age stone tombs of the Liaodong region, and that as other tomb systems disappeared, Stone-mound tombs were mainly used and were unified into Stone-mound tombs after the founding of Goguryeo.
