Abstract
Since the title of “King of Baekje” was awarded to the King of Baekje Yuying for the first time by the Central Plains Dynasty in the 12th year of Emperor Yixi reign of Emperor An of the Eastern Jin Dynasty) (416 AD), the title of “King of Baekje” has always accompanied the history of the de-awarding of official titles of Baekje in the Southern Dynasty as well as in the Sui and Tang dynasties. In the Southern Dynasties, there were strict procedures for the removal and grant of the official title. According to historical records, the Southern Dynasty had successively enthroned the king of Baekje nine times, but the title of “King of Baekje” was enthroned only six times, and the reasons for the enthroning were not clear. This article explores the system of enfeoffment during the Southern the Dynasty, examines the standardization of aforementioned system, discusses the position and changes of Baekje in the external relations of the Southern Dynasty, and focuses on exploring the fact that Liu Song chose not to temporarily remove the title of “Baekje King” due to his greater emphasis on the relationship with Goguryeo in the first year of the Daming reign of Emperor Xiaowu (457 AD), And in the third year of the Tianjia(天嘉) reign of Emperor Chen Wen (562 AD), the Chen Dynasty did not remove the title of “Baekje King” due to urgent internal restructuring.
